Jonny Quest

Clik here to view.I grew up, as did many in my generation, planning my week around Saturday Morning cartoons! On of the staples in the 70s and 80s, was reruns of Jonny Quest. Remember, of course, that this was before Cartoon Network. They have, thankfully, brought an even wider audience to the old cartoons that I loved as a kid.
The original series ran from for two short seasons in 1964 and 1965. In total, 26 episodes were produced. The series centered around Dr. Benton Quest and his 11-year old son Jonny. Jonny doesn’t have a mother keeping an eye on him, but he does have Race Bannon, body guard extraordinaire. Hadji, an 11-year old orphan from Calcutta and Bandit, an adorable if not yappy dog, round out the series.
I was excited to see that, like Transformers and G.I. Joe, somebody was seriously looking at Jonny Quest as a live action movie. According to a ComingSoon.net blog, that person is Peter Segal.
Unfortunately, me excitement didn’t last. Peter Segal directed such movies as Tommy Boy, Nutty Professor II, Anger Management, Longest Yard and 50 First Dates. None of these films has been horrible, in my opinion. But at the same time, none has been great. But it doesn’t stop there. Mr. Segal has brought other TV concepts from the 60s onto the silver screen with Naked Gun 33 1/3 and Get Smart. Neither of these were able to capture the spark of the original. I am still holding judgement on Grudge Match mainly because I think that Robert DeNiro is under appreciated as a comic actor. He might save the film.
On the plus side, there have been rumors of some pretty big names coming in for Race and Dr. Quests parts.
If he does manage to make it, I’m sure I’ll see it. And I also have the highest hopes for all movies.
What do you think? Good movie or bad? Who do you want to see play Jonny, Dr. Quest and Race? Leave a comment or mailto:jason@geek-hq.com
